Geography
  • Located on a flat land surrounded by Mount Fuji in the west, Mount Hakone in the east, Mount Tanzawa in the north, and Mount Ashitaka in the southwest
Climate
  • Cool, rainy area with average annual temperature of 12.9℃ and average annual precipitation of 3,433mm
  • Frequent fog due to high humidity; one of few cities in Shizuoka Prefecture that receives frequent snowfall; cool in summer with no prior cases of tropical nights
Industries
  • Agriculture and forestry (rice farming, horseradish), industrial (Komakado Industrial Park, liquor factories), tourism (base for climbing Mount Fuji and a vacation city with private and corporate vacation homes and villas)
Characteristics
  • Located on the foothills of Mount Fuji with the city located at 250~600m above sea level (City Hall at 450m altitude)
  • Highland city located in the eastern part of Shizuoka, serving as a transportation hub for tourists visiting Mount Fuji and Hakone
  • Prospered as a base for climbing Mount Fuji and developed as a vacation destination following the opening of the Tokaido Line (present-day Gotemba Line) in 1889
  • Became a military town, with the establishment of a training camp by the army in 1912; still contains a base camp and training camp for the Ground Self-Defense Force and the Fuji Zone of the U.S. Marine Corps Camp based in Japan; one-third of the city area contains defense facilities
  • There are golf courses and the Gotemba Premium Outlet, the largest outlet mall in Japan
